Time Use Survey

The Time Use Survey (TUS) provides detailed information on the way people spend time. It enables the provision of information on unpaid work, out-of-work activities and issues related to adaptation of work and family life. TUS aims to establish and establish a new tradition in conducting observations on the use of time at national level in a long-term perspective; build a set of standard indicators in order to assess how Albanians spend their time. The way in which these choices affect the use of time have important policy uses, particularly in the areas of employment, social protection, childcare, the labor market, health and education.

The main goal of the Albanian time use survey is to develop nationally representative estimates of how people divide their time on various life activities. This study deals with the use of time in Albania for the population of 10 years and over.

The Albanian time use survey (ATUS) applies the Eurostat Harmonised European time use survey (HETUS) guidelines. The guidelines describe thoroughly the HETUS approach. The time use data are collected by means of a fixed interval (10 minutes) time diary in which the respondents record the use of their time for two randomly designated diary days. The diary records a main activity, a potential parallel or simultaneous activity, the location of the activity, means of transport and the presence of other persons. A few days before the designated diary days the respondents are interviewed according to two questionnaires concerning household and individual circumstances. The HETUS approach is documented in detail by  Eurostat.

The target population for the Albanian Time Use Survey include residents of Albania aged 10 years and over. The sample unit is ‘households’, and all household members 10 years and older were asked to take part in the survey.

The sampling frame used for the ATUS is based on the summary data for the enumeration areas from Albanian Population and Housing Census 2001. It is stratified into four geographic areas (Central, Coastal, Mountain, and Tirana Urban). Samples are selected independently in every stratum by a two-stage sample selection.
