The population pyramid

The population pyramid gives a clear view of the population, by showing how many people there are in the country at different ages, and whether there is any difference in the number of males and females.

The composite factors of births, deaths and international migration resulted in the population structure observed in the 2023 Census. Figure 1 presents the population pyramid based on the 2023 Census, together with that of the 2011 Census, highlighting the development of the age- and sex structure of the population.

Analyzing the 50 to 69 age groups in the population pyramid, an expansion is observed corresponding to a period of birth between the mid-1950s and mid-1970s. In Albania, this period was characterized by a substantial increase in birth rates, commonly known as the “baby boom”.

Low fertility rates (below replacement level since 2001) and downward trend, increased life expectancy, combined with emigration of the reproductive age population resulted in a narrowing of the base of the population pyramid.

The 2023 Census shows that almost one in five persons (19.7 %) is 65 years of age or older, compared to one in nine persons (11.3 %) in the 2011 Census and 7.5 % in the 2001 Census.

The pyramid shows how many males and females of different age groups there were in the 2023 Census and the 2011 Census. The age groups explain the structure of the population by age at a given time, from which we can conclude that:

There is an ageing tendency of the population;
A reduction of the pyramid base is a result of the decrease in the number of births;
An enlargement of the top of the pyramid is a result of an increase in life expectancy;
Young people tend to emigrate, and this reduces the proportion of young people and increases that of older people.
