WHAT is the CENSUS?

The 2023 Population and Housing Census will be the 12th census since Albania became an independent nation in 1912; the first one was conducted in 1923. Since the 1989 census, the census methodology increasingly followed international recommendations for census taking. The 2023 census aims to be fully compliant with the recommendations of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) for the 2020 round of censuses and with the latest EU regulations for implementing Population and Housing Censuses.

The Population Census produces the official counting of the population in a country at the smallest geographical level, together with information on a selected number of demographic, social and economic characteristics of the total population. Similarly, a housing census produces the official counting of all dwellings in a country at the smallest geographical level, together with information on a selected number of characteristics of the housing.

When will the 2023 Population and Housing Census be conducted.

The Population and Housing Census will take place in September 2023. The fieldwork will last six weeks.
