Launching of Household Migration Survey (HMS) and Complementary Qualitative Study
INSTAT, the World Bank, IOM and GIZ today presented the findings of the second Household Migration Survey (HMS) and the complementary Qualitative Study “Challenges and Opportunities in the Integration of Returnees and Diaspora Engagement in Albania,” further strengthening national evidence on migration dynamics, mobility patterns and their links to the country’s development.
The launch event brought together the Institute of Statistics (INSTAT), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and the World Bank, along with representatives from national institutions, municipalities, development partners, academia, civil society and the media.
Led by INSTAT and the World Bank, the Household Migration Survey provides nationally representative data on migration trends, return migration, remittances and household-level mobility.
According to the results, approximately 37 percent of Albanian households have at least one member who has migrated, either currently living abroad or having returned from migration. About 22 percent of households have members currently living outside Albania, while 20 percent have at least one return migrant.
Complementing the Survey, the Qualitative Study, led by IOM in collaboration with GIZ, examines how migration, return and diaspora engagement are experienced and managed by individuals, families, local authorities and institutions across the country.
