The annual population estimates of 1st January is consistent with the definitions of the UN for the evaluation of population, based on the concept of usual residence. According to this definition in the total resident population are included all those people who lives or are indented to live in the country at least 12 months, regardless their citizenship. The annual population estimates of 1st January covers all the territory of Albania, disaggregated by 12 prefectures.

Since 2011, the data on births, marriages and deaths are electronically sent by General Directory of Civil Status.  The Statistical Office in the Ministry of Justice provides statistical data on divorces. INSTAT processes only completed cases with a final court decision.
