The transport statistics include a wide system of information about the transport of passenger and freights, infrastructure of road line, and number of vehicles as well. Also the transport statistics cover the measures of road and rail way traffic.

Civil air transport is performed through the only one civil airport, which it is "Mother Thereza" in Rinas. Actually, this activity has been developed through 18 air companies, from which 16 are foreign ones and 2 joint ventures.

Sea transport in Albania has been performed through four 4 ports: Durres, Vlora, Saranda and Shengjini. The biggest and the most important port is Durres port.

Railway network of Albania has a length of 399 km.

The tendency towards a bigger use of the private road transport is related with a bigger number of road vehicles.

Road accidents include only the accidents which cause death and injuries.

The chance for occurrence of a road accident may be linked to several factors, including the number of kilometers travelled, extent and quality of the road infrastructure, weather and geographical conditions, population density. Behavior of drivers may become as well a possible reason for occurrence of accidents, as for instance inappropriate training or lack of experience, concentration, driving speed exceeding the limit, failure to abide by the road traffic c rules and consumption of alcoholic drinks.

Road transport

Methodology

Road transport statistics aim at defining the passenger and goods flow both within the regions and between them. These movements are very closely linked to the level of economic activity of these regions. Transport statistics rely on data obtained from administrative sources and they cover: road transport represented with the number of vehicles per passengers and goods.

Road transport

Any movements of goods and/or passengers using a road vehicle on a given road network.

Stock of road vehicles

Number of road vehicles recorded on the set day in a given location and licensed to be used in public traffic routes.

Passenger car

It is a road motor vehicle, other than a motor cycle, intended for the carriage of passengers and designed to seat no more than nine persons (including the driver)

Bus

It is a passenger road motor vehicle designed - t - seat more than 9 persons (including the driver).

Maritime transport

Methodology

The coastline of 362 kilometers connects the prefectures of Lezha, Durrës and Vlorë with other prefectures of the country and hundreds of other cities in the world.

These are the prefectures that have a water network ensuring connection with the world. Maritime transport plays an important role in the carriage of goods to Europe and around the world. It facilitates trade and contacts between our country and all other countries, accounting for the main weight in the carriage of goods by means of transport.

Maritime transport collects data on the number of passengers entering and exiting the territory of the country and quantity in tonnes of goods and mail carried by sea.

A main port is considered to be a statistical port if the annual movement is no less than 200.000 passengers or more than one million tonnes of loaded/unloaded goods is recorded.

Maritime transport

Maritime transport is any movement of goods and/or passengers using merchant ships on journeys, which are undertaken wholly or partly at sea.

Port of loading

The port taken into account is the port where the goods were loaded on a seagoing vessel to be transported by it.

Port of unloading

The port taken into account is the port where the goods were unloaded from a seagoing vessel after having been transported by it.

 

International sea transport

International sea transport is sea transport between two ports located in two different countries.

Sea passenger

Any person makes a voyage on a sea going vessel. Service staff assigned to seagoing vessels is not regarded as passengers.

 

Sea passenger embarked

Any passenger who boards seagoing vessels to be conveyed by it.

 

Sea passenger disembarked

A passenger disembarked from a seagoing vessel after having been conveyed by it.

Air Transport

Methodology

Air transport activity is focused on the activity performed by the only airport in the prefecture of Tirana. In the case of Albania, air

Transport data cover the main airport activity located geographically in the prefecture of Tirana. In other words, air transport is measured by the number of passengers entering and exiting the territory of the country and quantity in tonnes of goods and mail carried by air. An airport is considered primary if more than 150 000 passengers (per year) are recorded or more than one hundred kilograms of goods and mail. Air transport statistics cover the activities of joint or foreign agencies operating in Albania.

Air passenger

Air passenger is any person whose air journey begins or terminates at the reporting airport.

Freight transport

Freight transport is any property loaded or unloaded onto or off an aircraft, excluding passenger baggage and mail.

Rail transport

Methodology

Rail transport activity is focused on the activity for the carriage of goods by railway in the country and internationally. Moreover, it covers services for the inland passenger rail transport. The length of railway line includes all railways length of operation line. The number of passenger and passenger-km is calculated based on the number of tickets sold by the tariffs.

The length of the railway is 379 km.

Rail transport is concentrated in the prefectures of Durrës, Elbasan, Shkodër, Tiranë, Vlorë.

Line of communication made up by rail exclusively for the use of railway vehicles.

Railway transport

It is any movement of goods and/or passengers using a railway vehicle on a given railway network.

Ton-kilometer (TKM)

TKM is unit of measure representing the movement of one ton available in a wagon when performing services for which it is primarily intended over one kilometer.

Rail passenger

Passengers transported by rail are all persons, excluding members of the train crew, who makes a journey by rail.

Goods carried by rail

Any goods moved by rail vehicles. This includes all packaging and equipment, such as containers, swap bodies or pallets as well as road goods vehicles carried by rail.
